Windows Services – FAQs
How do I know if my windows need to be replaced?

Common signs are draughts around a closed window, condensation or misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit, frames that are rotting, warped or difficult to operate, and rising heating or cooling costs without another explanation. Several of these together usually indicate replacement rather than repair.

Misting between panes is the clearest single indicator, because it means the sealed unit has failed and the insulating gas has escaped; that cannot be repaired, only replaced. Draughts and difficult operation can sometimes be resolved by adjustment or new seals if the frame itself is sound. Rot or warping in a timber frame is more serious, since it affects both performance and the surrounding structure. An assessment should distinguish between the two. Our windows page covers what to look for.

Installation itself is quick: most windows take under an hour each, so a typical house is often completed in one to three days. The wider process, from survey and ordering to installation, more commonly spans several weeks because windows are usually made to measure.

Manufacturing lead time is normally the longest part of the timeline. Standard sizes and finishes are quicker; custom shapes, specific colours or unusual glazing take longer. On the installation days, each window is removed and replaced in sequence so the house is never left open, and any repair to the surrounding opening is done at that point. Weather has less effect than on most exterior work. Our windows page explains the process. Confirming the lead time in writing when you order avoids uncertainty while the units are being made.

Yes. We provide a free, no-obligation assessment and a written estimate. The visit establishes the condition of the existing windows and frames, takes accurate measurements, and identifies any repair needed to the surrounding opening before new units can be fitted.

Measuring on site matters more with windows than with most work, because replacements are made to fit and an error is expensive to correct. The assessment also distinguishes between units that genuinely need replacing and ones that could be repaired or adjusted, which is worth knowing before committing to a whole-house project. You receive an itemised estimate covering units, installation and any associated repair rather than a single figure. You can book a visit whenever suits. If only a few units have failed, replacing those first and the rest later is a reasonable way to spread the work.

They can, particularly when replacing single glazing or failed sealed units. Modern double glazing with low-emissivity coatings reduces heat transfer and draughts noticeably. The size of the saving depends on what you are replacing, the rest of the building, and how the property is heated and cooled.

Windows are one part of the envelope, so the benefit depends on the whole. A house with poor insulation and significant air leakage elsewhere will see less improvement than the window specification alone suggests. Installation quality also matters: a well-made unit fitted with poor sealing around the opening will underperform. In the Bay Area, comfort and draught reduction are often more noticeable than the bill itself. Treat specific saving figures with caution unless they reflect your property. Our windows page covers the options.

Yes, both. Residential work covers house windows of all types, from single replacements to whole-property projects. Commercial work covers larger buildings and premises where installation has to be phased around occupants, trading hours, access equipment and building security.

The differences are mainly scale, access and scheduling. Commercial projects more often involve working at height, larger units requiring mechanical handling, and sequencing so the building stays secure and weathertight throughout. Specification tends to prioritise durability, safety glazing where required, and ease of future maintenance. Residential work places more weight on appearance, matching the character of the property, and minimising disruption to the household. Our windows page covers both. Where a property is listed or in a conservation area, the style and materials permitted should be confirmed before ordering, since replacements may need to match the originals.
